OpenIDVerify: Secure Identity and Age Verification
OpenIDVerify aims to deliver a secure, privacy-preserving identity and age verification service for websites, integrating with the European Digital Identity Wallet (EUDI Wallet) and leveraging artificial intelligence for accessibility. With a 2 million euro budget, this Proof of Concept will demonstrate seamless website integration, compliance with EU regulations, and secure data protection using Paytia's PCI-compliant solutions.
The system will be free for websites, with revenue from user-consented, anonymised data analytics. As an open-source project with API access, OpenIDVerify fosters innovation, aligning with the Digital Europe Programme's goals for digital transformation and cybersecurity.
Project Overview & Objectives
Verifying identity and age online is critical for protecting users, especially minors, and ensuring compliance with regulations like GDPR and eIDAS 2.0. Current solutions often involve costly proprietary systems or compromise privacy, limiting accessibility.
EUDI Wallet Integration
Develop a POC integrating EUDI Wallet and AI-based verification, free for websites
Regulatory Compliance
Ensure compliance with GDPR, eIDAS 2.0, and payment regulations using Paytia's solutions
Open-Source Development
Release an open-source system with API access for third-party innovation
User Protection
Protect users, particularly minors, by ensuring secure and compliant verification
Research & Development Approach
The project's R&D strategy focuses on creating a robust foundation for secure identity verification while maintaining user privacy and regulatory compliance.
AI Verification
Develop AI models for facial recognition, document verification, and liveness detection using open-source libraries like OpenCV and DLib. Research will focus on fairness to minimize biases across demographics.
Decentralized Identity
Implement W3C Verifiable Credentials and Decentralized Identifiers (DIDs) using Hyperledger Indy, enabling users to store credentials in the EUDI Wallet.
Ethical AI
Conduct studies to ensure AI transparency and fairness, addressing potential biases through diverse datasets and regular auditing processes.
System Development & Architecture
The technical foundation of OpenIDVerify combines secure infrastructure with user-friendly interfaces and seamless payment processing.

User Interface
Web-based verification interface
API Development
RESTful API with OpenAPI specifications
Backend Infrastructure
Secure, scalable cloud services
Payment Processing
Paytia's Secure Virtual Terminal
The system will be built using open-source technologies, hosted on GitHub under an Apache-2.0 license. Paytia's platform, compliant with PCI-DSS, offloads 96% of PCI responsibilities by securely capturing card details, ensuring no data is stored or processed within the POC's systems.
EUDI Wallet Integration & Testing
API Development
Develop APIs to request and verify credentials via the EUDI Wallet, aligning with the European Digital Identity Framework
Interoperability
Ensure compatibility with EU digital identity systems, contributing to standardization efforts
Pilot Testing
Partner with e-commerce and gaming websites to test integration and payment processing
User Validation
Engage diverse user groups to assess usability, accessibility, and system performance
Security testing will include comprehensive penetration testing to identify and mitigate potential vulnerabilities. The system will be validated for compliance with GDPR, eIDAS, and PCI-DSS via Paytia's secure payment infrastructure.
